TMJ DISORDER | JAW PAIN MASSAGE
The Temporomandibular joint can become dysfunctional for several reasons, such as stress, injury, or misalignment. 1 in 4 people in the UK suffer symptoms. On average, the jaw can exert 50kg of pressure for women and 70kg for men, imagine clenching your jaw all night at that pressure. It is no wonder this small, delicate joint can become painful.
Less is known about the long and surprising list of symptoms, from mild to debilitating. Headaches, migraines, clenching, locking or popping of the jaw, grinding teeth, unexplained pain (in teeth, gums or sinus’) not caused by infection, eye muscle twitches, inability to bite or chew properly, neck pain, problems swallowing or feeling like there is something stuck in the throat.
The role of the massage therapist for someone suffering from TMJ dysfunction is to reduce pain and improve function. This is done by using various massage techniques including myofascial release and trigger point therapy. Exercises and some self-treatment, as well as advice on lifestyle and daily habits, may be given.

I have been with Laura at the Body Works since 2018 for sports massages to support my running journey. Very early on, Laura helped with imbalances with my legs and the general stiffness from inactivity. However, over the years, this has turned into maintenance (twice a month) to help me recover from what she says is my crazy race calendar. A regular customer for almost 6 years – I think that really says it all.
